Adrenalectomy The adrenal glands can have benign functional disorders or can develop neoplastic tumors, or be the site of metastatic disease.
Removal of the adrenal glands via open surgery was
difficult primarily due to their anatomical location. With laparoscopic surgery, the patient is placed on the contra lateral flank and CO2 is introduced into the peritoneum.
This readily permits localization and dissection of the
adrenal gland.
Adrenalectomy has been the first universally accepted
laparoscopic procedure because the surgical time is very much shorter than open surgery and the hospital stay is minimum ( 2-3 days).
